5 November 2016 - when enough is enough

If you are not trustworthy with what belongs to another,
who will give you what is yours?
No servant can serve two masters.

We need to be stewards who can be trusted with the wealth of this world. And we need to be able to be trusted without it. This means that we need to be able to live both in humble circumstances and also with abundance. We need to be trustworthy whether we are well fed or hungry. We should not let the push and pull of this world master us. There is only one way to not serve the world as master. Let us instead choose to serve Jesus with love and devotion. When we do so we learn the secret of being sufficient no matter the circumstance.

I have the strength for everything through him who empowers me.

Serving Jesus as master, we don't fear poverty, and we don't fear wealth. Like Paul we can receive a gift from others, to allow them to exercise charity and to love us. We don't have to worry that such gifts will master us. We don't worry, for example, that we will come to depend on them so much as to fear their absence. Whether we have much or little, if we serve Jesus first, we have enough.

My God will fully supply whatever you need,
in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

When we serve Jesus as master we learn not to esteem what is an abomination in the sight of God. We learn that it is the man who fears the LORD who is blessed. Esteeming what God esteems we find freedom and joy.

His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear.
Lavishly he gives to the poor;
his generosity shall endure forever;
his horn shall be exalted in glory.
