18 May 2019 - room to grow

Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you for so long a time
and you still do not know me, Philip?

Jesus is inviting us to a deeper relationship with him. It is a relationship in which we are invited to pay more attention to everything Jesus is doing in our midst. We overlook many small wonders that he does everyday because they seem so small as to be negligible to us. We do not realize that they are mustard seeds that will grow into the kingdom.

How can you say, 'Show us the Father'?
Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?

We have to give Jesus time and attention so that seeds will grow in us. Only by watching his actions in the circumstances of our lives do we see specifically what he means that the Father is in him and he in the Father. Only by careful attention to his words do we also hear the voice of the Father speaking.

For so the Lord has commanded us,
I have made you a light to the Gentiles,
that you may be an instrument of salvation
to the ends of the earth.

We learn about the Father's love for the world and his desire to give eternal life to all people. We do, at least, if we're attentive. Otherwise we will just see persecution and hopelessness. We may still check in with Jesus. But without loving attention we don't penetrate to the Father's plan at work in our midst. It is true that it is hidden. It is slow as we recon speed. But he wants us to wait on him with patient love.

All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation by our God.
