Jesus ascends to heaven. He does so not in retreat, but in victory.
God mounts his throne to shouts of joy: a blare of trumpets for the Lord.
He is not further away from us. We need the eyes of our hearts to be enlightened so that we can realize it.
And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age
From heaven he reigns. He is enthroned as the head of the Church.
And he put all things beneath his feet
and gave him as head over all things to the church
From heaven he leads us. Our victorious King reigns over us. He gives us the gifts of his victory to empower us.
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you,
and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
throughout Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth.
Although Jesus is closer to us than ever his physical body is no longer the place where others encounter him. Instead, they encounter him through us, his body, the Church. Jesus reigns from on high. His body is not separated from this victory. It is "the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way."
We receive his power so that we can be this place of encounter. We receive the Spirit in order to make us his body not in name only but in truth.. His vantage point beholds all things. We can trust him to guide us. We ought not just stand here watching after him. We need to get moving!
They said, "Men of Galilee,
why are you standing there looking at the sky?
This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven
will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven."
