22 May 2017 - living memory

We need the Advocate, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father to testify to us.

When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father,
the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father,
he will testify to me.

He is the one who opens our hearts to pay attention just as the LORD does for Lydia, the dealer in purple cloth.

and the Lord opened her heart to pay attention
to what Paul was saying.
After she and her household had been baptized

The Spirit leads us into all truth (see John 16:13) and reminds us of everything that Jesus said (see John 14:26). Without the Spirit, we don't listen, we don't remember, and we don't proclaim. We need him to help us to listen because the enemy is all too ready distract us. We need the Spirit to remind us of what Jesus said because the enemy is all to ready to steal words from our hearts once we do receive them. We need him to help us proclaim lest our selfishness and desire for comfort keep us quiet.

Sing to the LORD a new song
of praise in the assembly of the faithful.
Let Israel be glad in their maker,
let the children of Zion rejoice in their king.

When Christianity speaks of truth it isn't speaking of something personal and abstract. It referring to the knowledge shared by friends about the deeper desires and most profound plans. The enemy wants to make us doubt this. But the Spirit is more than powerful enough to hold us in the truth. Just like Mary, we can remember and treasure in our hearts every word God speaks.
