[ Today's Readings ]
For all who depend on works of the law are under a curse;
for it is written, Cursed be everyone
who does not persevere in doing all the things
written in the book of the law.
This means that we cannot depend on ourselves. Our efforts are never going to be enough. Even if one unclean spirit leaves us we are still vulnerable unless we let God fill the empty space.
When an unclean spirit goes out of someone,
it roams through arid regions searching for rest
but, finding none, it says,
'I shall return to my home from which I came.''
When the broken world leaves us empty we must allow faith to fill the void.
Consequently, those who have faith are blessed
along with Abraham who had faith.
We aren't strong enough to escape from the palace of the strong man who is fully armed. But we know one who is stronger. If we put our faith in him he will set us free.
But when one stronger than he attacks and overcomes him,
he takes away the armor on which he relied
and distributes the spoils.
This is why people who are not with Jesus, people who do not accept God's revelation in faith to the degree that it has been made known to them, end up against him. People who don't gather with him end up scattering others, and scattered themselves.
Let us put our faith in Jesus. We all have emptiness inside. If we are consistently trying to live out the faith we continually kick more and more demons from our lives. But if we leave those places empty the demons will be back again. We need to give those parts of ourselves more completely to Jesus in faith.
He has given food to those who fear him;
he will forever be mindful of his covenant.
He has made known to his people the power of his works,
giving them the inheritance of the nations.
