1 October 2016 - being small

I give you praise, Father, Lord of heaven and earth,
for although you have hidden these things
from the wise and the learned
you have revealed them to the childlike.

Saint Therese, help us to come to Jesus like little children. We want to be big competent, functional adults. If people are treading upon the force of the enemy with impunity we want to be those people. But this can't be the priority. These big works only matter insofar as names are written in the book of life. If ours are not they will not avail us. If they are not directed toward the conversion of others they will not really avail them either.

We need to let ourselves be small enough that we can let the things which appear impressive go and concern ourselves with what really matters. We need the humility that Job learns. He is finally willing to accept anything that the LORD allows him to experience, even tests and trials. In it he learns to be obedient and trusting even when times are as hard as they can be.

I have dealt with great things that I do not understand;
things too wonderful for me, which I cannot know.
I had heard of you by word of mouth,
but now my eye has seen you.

Even when everything hurts and nothing is going right we can trust the LORD. We may not feel as though we're treading on the full force on the enemy but if humility, love, and obedience mark our actions we are doing what we should. We are, in fact, doing more harm to the enemy by these than anything else we could do.

The revelation of your words sheds light,
giving understanding to the simple.
