7 December 2017 - foundational principle

Pretty, though..

Trust in the LORD forever!
For the LORD is an eternal Rock.
He humbles those in high places,
and the lofty city he brings down;
He tumbles it to the ground,
levels it with the dust.

The LORD is an eternal Rock. Only he is solid. Only he is one on whom we can ultimately depend. Anything and anyone else besides him in which we might place our trust is shifting sand.

The rain fell, the floods came,
and the winds blew and buffeted the house.
And it collapsed and was completely ruined.

Why do we keep building on this sand? Time after time our projects get swept away by the wind. Yet rather than learning, we just get up and try again. We complain of frustration when we don't grow. We complain when we encounter the same issues time and again. We can even fool ourselves, saying 'Lord, Lord,' but really acting out of self interest and putting God's name on it. The trouble is that sand is where we start. We have to listen to the words of Jesus, keep the will of his Father and heaven, and go to him with everything we do and build. We are invited to build upon rock but we must heed the call and choose to do so.

Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them
will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.

We find that we don't have to do as much building as we thought. We don't find a barren desert of sand. We don't have to build a city from scratch. The Church is waiting to welcome us and to allow us to be filled with the peace of the Holy Spirit.

A strong city have we;
he sets up walls and ramparts to protect us.
Open up the gates
to let in a nation that is just,
one that keeps faith.
A nation of firm purpose you keep in peace;
in peace, for its trust in you.

Let's go to God's house. Rather than building, let us be built as living stones (see First Peter 2:5) into the dwelling place of God in the Spirit (see Ephesians 2:22)!

Open to me the gates of justice;
I will enter them and give thanks to the LORD.
This gate is the LORD's;
the just shall enter it.
