I write to you not because you do not know the truth
but because you do, and because every lie is alien to the truth.
As this year comes to an end let us take the time not only to plan for the future and the laudable changes we want to make but also to reflect on the truth we already know. This truth is a person. How has he been present in our lives throughout the past year? In what ways did our year reveal that Jesus was with us?
But to those who did accept him
he gave power to become children of God
Did we live this year with the confidence of God's children? Did we believe that there would be grace sufficient for anything he would ask of us?
But you have the anointing that comes from the Holy One,
and you all have knowledge.
We had the grace and the knowledge to live this past year exactly as our Father wanted. Rather than simply beating ourselves up for the times we failed to act like it let us rather spend our reflection today searching out the ways in which Jesus was present and to give thanks. Let us learn from Mary and treasure the action of God in our lives in our hearts.
Sing to the LORD a new song;
sing to the LORD, all you lands.
Of all the resolutions we make for the new year let one of them be to learn to see ourselves more as sons and daughters of God in Jesus Christ. He makes available the grace to believe that this is true so completely that it can actually change our expectations and our actions.
Jesus is the light that shines in the darkness that the darkness cannot overcome. He is the one thing necessary. He is a single choice we can make difference with an infinite ripple of effects in our lives and those of others. Looking back over the way he shone in our past years can help us to prepare and plan for his presence in the next.
the light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness has not overcome it.
