7 December 2018 - more than we can ask

On that day the deaf shall hear
the words of a book;
And out of gloom and darkness,
the eyes of the blind shall see.

We are the ones who are deaf and blind. We need the words of Scripture and the person of Jesus to open our ears and eyes. This may seem like an extreme analogy, but it isn't. We tacitly acknowledge the words of Scripture. We reply 'Lord, Lord.' But we do not build our lives on them. The promises of God are so amazing. And herein lies our blindness and our deafness. We fail to believe just how transformative his promises can be.

The lowly will ever find joy in the LORD,
and the poor rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.

Because of the promises of God true joy is possible for us. We can know fulfillment and endless peace in God's presence. He really can give us wisdom and make us saints. In fact he desires to do so.

They shall keep my name holy;
they shall reverence the Holy One of Jacob,
and be in awe of the God of Israel.
Those who err in spirit shall acquire understanding,
and those who find fault shall receive instruction.

We often let ourselves be content with seeing blurry shadows and hearing as though the signal is bad. The LORD wants both our sight and and hearing of him to become crystal clear.

"Do you believe that I can do this?"
"Yes, Lord," they said to him.
Then he touched their eyes and said,
"Let it be done for you according to your faith."

Let's believe him that he both is able and desires to open our eyes and our ears. As we press on toward Christmas he really wants us to be excited about all the grace he is offering. He wants to stoke our desire so that he can surpass it.

One thing I ask of the LORD;
this I seek:
To dwell in the house of the LORD
all the days of my life,
That I may gaze on the loveliness of the LORD
and contemplate his temple.
