Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy
from carousing and drunkenness
and the anxieties of daily life,
and that day catch you by surprise like a trap.
We need to be vigilant at all times. The world tries to lull us to sleep. Sometimes, rather than a wholly conscious choice to stop following Jesus, we just let ourselves become filled with so many worldly concerns that we no longer have time for him. We no longer think of him. We no longer live for him and for his kingdom. It isn't because we chose not to. It's because little things gradually edged him out. But this need not happen. We just need to be alert.
Earthly kingdoms might seem to be worth the worry. They seem to be able to do quite a lot of damage and harm to so many. But concern for those kingdoms must not usurp our ability to seek first the kingdom of God. Between his kingdom and the kingdoms of the earth there is no comparison.
Then the kingship and dominion and majesty
of all the kingdoms under the heavens
shall be given to the holy people of the Most High,
Whose Kingdom shall be everlasting:
all dominions shall serve and obey him.
It's easy to be ready to welcome the LORD when circumstances are not pulling us in a million different directions. Let us learn to be more than fair weather friends to Jesus. Let us always be ready to welcome him, to thank him, to praise him, and to hear him speak to us. This is not something we can do on our own. The flesh is weak but the Spirit stands ready to assist us.
Holy men of humble heart, bless the Lord;
praise and exalt him above all forever.
