[ Today's Readings ]
LORD, we often turn to idols instead of seeking you. No sooner do you deliver us from Egypt than we become depraved and start worshipping the molten calves of pride, lust, and anger, entertainment and sensuality. We are utterly preoccupied with ourselves.
Thank you for not abandoning us LORD. You not only do not abandon us but you teach us to love others even when they don't appreciate us, just as you love us when we don't appreciate you. You teach us not to abandon others even when they abandon us.
Let your blazing wrath die down;
relent in punishing your people.
You teach us to stand in the breach for our brothers and sisters even when they are guilty of all sorts of sin. You do this to give us hearts like your own Sacred Heart.
So the LORD relented in the punishment
he had threatened to inflict on his people.
You want us to recognize the testimony about who you are. You tell us that to believe in you is eternal life. Yet our idols distract us. Even so, you keep calling us back. Often the testimony is right before our eyes and yet we fail to notice.
You search the Scriptures,
because you think you have eternal life through them;
even they testify on my behalf.
But you do not want to come to me to have life.
Teach us to come to you and have life! What could be better? What do we need more than that?
You do not abandon us. You continue to offer to reveal yourself to us. You guide us to notice you in memories where you were present but idolatry made us miss you. Can it be that you were there all along? Help us to see you!
For if you had believed Moses,
you would have believed me,
because he wrote about me.
Continue to send shepherds to stand in the breach for us. Continue to remember us as you favor your people, O LORD. We are lost without you!
This song has a good line about burning up the idols in our lives by the fire of the Spirit...
