He replied, "Rather, blessed are those
who hear the word of God and observe it."
More than the blessings that we receive passively from God, the blessings of the things God works through us are those for which we should be grateful. God blesses Mary so that her faith can bless the world. We, like Mary, can't hear the word of God and observe it without faith. It was Mary's faith in response to the angel that allowed God to work through her to bring Jesus to the world.
For through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus.
Mary becomes the mother of God through her faith. We become his family through faith as well. This was not something the law could accomplish. If we want to hear the word of God and observe it we must begin by faith, by clothing ourselves with Christ.
The point today is that we are too tempted to be content to receive blessings and not excited enough to be transformed by those blessings. Everything God does for us is an invitation to come to an ever deeper faith and trust. Mary shows us just how to welcome that invitation and be transformed.
Look to the LORD in his strength;
seek to serve him constantly.
Recall the wondrous deeds that he has wrought,
his portents, and the judgments he has uttered.
