We are members of the household of God. We are being built into a temple where the Spirit can dwell.
Through him the whole structure is held together
and grows into a temple sacred in the Lord;
in him you also are being built together
into a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.
The Spirit dwells not only in individuals who are baptized but also in the Church as we come together and are united. We cannot come and go in the Church as ships passing in the night. We can't just sit together and remain strangers and sojourners. In Christ, we are not just built up. We are built together into this temple. The Spirit opens new possibilities of intimate friendship and fellowship. He us to minister to one another. If we try to do this on our own we are missing out on a lot of the grace that God offers to us.
Jesus calls his disciples to form his Church. He calls them to himself but in doing so he calls them together as well. They are united around him who is the capstone. He is calling us as well. He wants us to be living stones. Stones need to be joined one to the other to fulfill their mission. To provide a place where the world can dwell, can rest and find shelter, we need to let ourselves be built.
Through all the earth their voice resounds,
and to the ends of the world, their message.
