6 October 2020 - the splendor of truth

the people who sit in darkness
have seen a great light,
on those dwelling in a land overshadowed by death
light has arisen.

Our first contact with this light comes through the preaching of Jesus. He separates truth from error so that we may cease living lives misled by error.

From that time on, Jesus began to preach and say,
“Repent, for the Kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

By convincing us to believe lies about ourselves, others, and God, the devil gets his hooks into us and is able to control us. To escape this control we need a first and most basic belief.

we should believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ,

Only from that vantage are we in a position to "test the spirits to see whether they belong to God". Only then can we "keep his commandments and do what pleases him" because only then can we have confidence about what that entails.

Those who keep his commandments remain in him, and he in them,
and the way we know that he remains in us
is from the Spirit whom he gave us.

From our first contact with the truth of Jesus flows every other blessing. As he speaks the words of truth to conform our minds with the truth, reality, which itself was disordered through our disobedience comes back into order.

He went around all of Galilee,
teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Gospel of the Kingdom,
and curing every disease and illness among the people.

The certainty Jesus has in trusting his Father is itself the victory that conquers the world in a sense. This certainty is described as obedience. It is precisely this that the Father recognizes in the sacrifice of the Son. It is because of it that he is raised in victory.

The seed of the same certainty and the same obedience has been planted within our hearts as well.

You belong to God, children, and you have conquered them,
for the one who is in you
is greater than the one who is in the world.

Imagine what might happen if we let it grow.

I will give you all the nations for an inheritance.
