(Audio)
Then he had a dream: a stairway rested on the ground,
with its top reaching to the heavens;
and God's messengers were going up and down on it.
Jesus himself is the stairway the bridges heaven and earth.
And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” (see John 1:51).
How perfectly Jesus fulfills the desires of Jacob. Jesus is the God who is with us always even unto the end of the age (see Matthew 28:20). He is the Good Shepherd that leads his sheep on their journey. He feeds us with his own flesh and clothes us with the robes of salvation, the baptismal garments of the Holy Spirit. Jesus brings us safely not to the houses of our various fathers but to his own Father's house.
If God remains with me,
to protect me on this journey I am making
and to give me enough bread to eat and clothing to wear,
and I come back safe to my father's house, the LORD shall be my God.
To touch Jesus is to touch heaven itself.
She said to herself, "If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured."
When he takes us by the hand when are raised from the slumber of death. We arise to new life in the Spirit. This is what will happen on the last day. But we can begin to experience it here and now because Jesus is still in our midst. We can still touch him, especially in the sacraments. Jesus is the everlasting embrace between heaven and earth. Let's remember that the next time we receive absolution or the Eucharist. Let us approach Jesus with the same faith as the hemorrhaging woman.
"If only I can touch his cloak, I shall be cured."
The psalmist knows this secret.
Because he clings to me, I will deliver him;
So let us touch, let us cling to the one who unites heaven and earth, Jesus Christ our savior.
