When Jesus disembarked and saw the vast crowd,
his heart was moved with pity for them,
for they were like sheep without a shepherd;
and he began to teach them many things.
Jesus placed his compassion for the crowd above the need of his disciples for rest. Solomon asks for an understanding heart to judge the people rather than anything for himself. Yet we know that when the kingdom is sought for all else besides is given.
In addition, I give you what you have not asked for,
such riches and glory that among kings there is not your like.
We should not let fear stop us from showing compassion. It appears that our resources will come up short. It seems like we'll crash and burn. Yet somehow the LORD sustains us. Somehow, as we serve, we gain all riches.
We do rest when there is time for rest. But there is also a time to forego rest for the sake of others. Even then the LORD sustains us. Choosing to rest at times like that only leaves us restless. Choosing to serve renews us.
In the way of your decrees I rejoice,
as much as in all riches.
