[ Today's Readings ]
The wisdom of this world tells us that if we lower our nets somewhere and catch nothing than we ought to give up. The wisdom of the Spirit, foolishness in the eyes of the world, listens to the words of Jesus.
“Put out into deep water and lower your nets for a catch.”
Simon said in reply,
“Master, we have worked hard all night and have caught nothing,
but at your command I will lower the nets.”
Trusting in this wisdom isn't easy. It sometimes seems to ask us to do something again that got us burned before. It asks us to trust even when it doesn't make sense. It asks us to believe even when it is difficult. There is great gain when we learn to trust in this way. We are no longer limited by ourselves, our abilities, or our resources.
So let no one boast about human beings, for everything belongs to you,
Paul or Apollos or Cephas,
or the world or life or death,
or the present or the future:
all belong to you, and you to Christ, and Christ to God.
Do we ever even boast about anything except human beings? Do we remember the riches that we have in Christ and how they are worth more than all earthly treasure? Have we learned to boast even of the Cross of Christ like Paul has (see Galatians 6:14)? When we learn to treasure what matters we quickly find that we ourselves have become rich through the grace of Jesus.
When they had done this, they caught a great number of fish
and their nets were tearing.
It's actually a little scary. It is a lot like putting up into the deep. But it is worth it. And God always rewards the trust we place in him.
He shall receive a blessing from the LORD,
a reward from God his savior.
Such is the race that seeks for him,
that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.
